Nuts and Seeds

Nuts and Seeds

Nuts and seeds are an awesome way to up your good fats, protein and mineral intake. Loads of people are scared of nuts because they contain fat; the reality is, however, that we need fats to function and the fats found in raw nuts and seeds are actually good for you.

Raw vs Roasted: The difference with raw nuts is that they haven’t been heated. Because nuts are such a great source of fats, when the nuts are roasted those fats can go rancid. This means the rancid fat can have a free radical effect on the body! Free radical damage can cause oxidative damage in the body and we don’t want that because it is linked to a host of degenerative diseases. Go raw when you can, and if you are a sucker for roasted nuts, buy them raw and dry roast them yourself! Sometimes for a yummo, snack I’ll roast a handful of mixed nuts and sprinkle them with chilli flakes!

Pomegranate Power Mix

A great way to keep your energy levels sustained throughout the day is to make your very own trail mix. For this recipe, it is important to go for the most pure and wholesome ingredients. Dried fruit naturally loses its colour in the drying process. Steer clear of dried fruits that have preservatives added in order to maintain bright colouration. The best part of creating your own trail mix is that you can explore different ingredients to suit your taste buds.

Dried pomegranate seeds, raw brazil nuts, raw almonds, cranberries, goji berries, pepitas (pumpkin seeds), raw sesame seeds and shredded coconut.

This is also a great source of antioxidants, good fats, minerals and fibre!
