Energy Boosters!
We are all in need of an energy boost every now and then! Here are a few simple and effective energy-boosting tricks! A general rule of thumb is to go for wholefoods or foods that are in their most natural state.
Make your own trail mix from organic dried fruits, nuts and seeds. The dried fruit will give you a quick energy burst and the nuts and seeds will sustain your energy by balancing your blood glucose levels. Quick tip: when you’re picking dried fruit go, for organic or preservative free because we want the most natural, nutrient-dense mix! Raw nuts are a healthier option than roasted nuts. If you really love your roasted nuts, try roasting your raw nuts at home on a low heat and use a good Himalayan or Celtic rock salt.
Eat breakfast! It’s true that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It kick-starts your metabolism, which is like your internal engine. If you skip breaky, your energy levels will slump by about 10am and you’ll be in need of a quick pick-me-up like coffee or a sweet treat. Although, it’s true that these will give you energy, trust me: it won’t last! The key is to have a breaky high in complex carbohydrates. These boys will give you sustained energy throughout the day, not just a brief burst!
Skip the sugar and go for whole foods. Refined sugars (like the stuff that’s in chocolate bars, sweets and ice-cream) are void of nutrients and only provide a quick hit of energy, which is closely followed by a massive slump in energy levels!
Bananas are perfect energy foods because they provide the body with complex carbohydrates, allowing for a sustained, slower release of energy. A mate of mine calls bananas a “meal in a peel”! This is very true. They are the perfect energy food if you’re on the run and getting hungry!
B vitamins are also important when it comes to energy production. Try including foods that are good sources of B vitamins into your eating plan: raw nuts and seeds, whole grains, organic eggs and broccoli are all winners!
